Crowns
A crown/bridge is permanent protection for the teeth in the form of a cap. They are cemented onto existing teeth or implants and can only be removed by the dentist.
When do you need a crown or bridge?
A crown is used when: a severely damaged tooth needs to be protected from complete breakage, there is no longer sufficient tooth substance to attach a filling, a severely discolored or malformed tooth needs to be covered, or the tooth is pulpotomized (root-treated), especially in heavily loaded posterior teeth. A bridge is used when one or more teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented onto natural teeth or implants that surround the tooth gap. An imbalance due to missing teeth can trigger gum disease and temporomandibular joint disorders.
Process
Crowns and bridges are individually manufactured for you in the dental laboratory after pretreatment of the affected teeth. After preparing the tooth, we take an impression that is used in the laboratory to create your individual crown or bridge. In the meantime, you will receive a temporary restoration.
Duration & Notes
The treatment typically requires 2-3 sessions. The final crown or bridge is placed after 1-2 weeks. There are 3 types of bridges/crowns: Full cast crowns/bridges made of metal, metal-ceramic crowns/bridges (metal with ceramic veneer), and full ceramic crowns/bridges (without metal core).
Costs
Costs depend on the material chosen (full cast, metal-ceramic, full ceramic). Statutory health insurance provides a fixed subsidy.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a crown or bridge last?
With good care, crowns and bridges can last 10-15 years or longer.
Which material is best?
Full ceramic crowns offer the best aesthetics and are metal-free. Metal-ceramic crowns are particularly robust and durable. Full cast crowns made of metal are the most cost-effective option.
Can a bridge also be attached to implants?
Yes, bridges can be cemented onto both natural teeth and implants.
